Pope John Paul II Beatification on May 1, 2011

The Venerable Pope John Paul II, born Karol Józef Wojtyla  (18 May 1920 – 2 April 2005), reigned as Pope of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of The Holy See from 16 October 1978 until his death on 2 April 2005, at 84 years and 319 days of age. His was the second-longest documented pontificate, which lasted 26 years and 168 days; only Pope Pius IX(1846–1878) who served 31 years, has reigned longer. Pope John Paul II is the only Slavic orPolish pope to date, and was the first non-Italian Pope since Dutch Pope Adrian VI (1522–1523) .

John Paul II has been acclaimed as one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. It is widely held that he was instrumental in ending communism in his native Poland and eventually all of Europe. Conversely, he denounced the excesses of capitalism. John Paul II is widely said to have significantly improved the Catholic Church's relations withJudaism, Islam, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion.Though criticised by progressives for upholding the Church's teachings against artificial contraception and the ordination of women, he was also criticized by traditionalists for his support of the Church's Second Vatican Council and its reform of theLiturgy as well as his ecumenical efforts.

Pope Benedict XVI approved the decree for the beatification of his predecessor during a Jan. 14 audience with the head of the Vatican department for saints' causes, Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Pope John Paul II’s cause is extraordinary in the history of the Church both for the speed with which it was advanced to beatification and because it will be his immediate successor to preside over the ceremony.

The Pope's cause was brought to beatification in just over five years, rivaling that of his good friend Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta for its speed.

A Filipino choir will have the distinction of being one of only two groups that will be singing during Pope John Paul II's beatification on Sunday, May 1.

The Karilagan Singers is a choir composed of Filipino migrants in Rome, Italy. They sing regularly at the Basilica of Santa Pudenziana in Rome, home of the Sentro Filipino Chaplaincy.

"Majority of our members are working as domestic [helpers]," said choir master Noel Parin in an interview aired over GMA News' "24 Oras" Tuesday night.

Message of Pope Benedict XVI- Video and Transcript

Easter is a message of peace in a world torn by conflicts and needless suffering. In his Urbi et Orbimessage, Pope Benedict XVI called for peace in the Middle East, and an end to violence in Libya, North Africa, and the Ivory Coast. He also offered solace to the refugees and victims of disasters such as Japan.

The Pope said right down to our own time -- even in these days of advanced communications technology -- the faith of Christians is based on the testimony of those who saw the Resurrection. The Resurrection is an event which, while it surpasses history, nevertheless happens at a precise moment in history and leaves an indelible mark upon it. He said the Easter Alleluia, resounding in the Church. - The Vatican

“In resurrectione tua, Christe, coeli et terra laetentur!
In your resurrection, O Christ, let heaven and earth rejoice!” (Liturgy of the Hours).

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Rome and across the world, Easter morning brings us news that is ancient yet ever new: Christ is risen! The echo of this event, which issued forth from Jerusalem twenty centuries ago, continues to resound in the Church, deep in whose heart lives the vibrant faith of Mary, Mother of Jesus, the faith of Mary Magdalene and the other women who first discovered the empty tomb, and the faith of Peter and the other Apostles.

Right down to our own time – even in these days of advanced communications technology – the faith of Christians is based on that same news, on the testimony of those sisters and brothers who saw firstly the stone that had been rolled away from the empty tomb and then the mysteriousmessengers who testified that Jesus, the Crucified, was risen. And then Jesus himself, the Lord and Master, living and tangible, appeared to Mary Magdalene, to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and finally to all eleven, gathered in the Upper Room (cf. Mk 16:9-14).

The resurrection of Christ is not the fruit of speculation or mystical experience: it is an event which, while it surpasses history, nevertheless happens at a precise moment in history and leaves an indelible mark upon it. The light which dazzled the guards keeping watch over Jesus’ tomb has traversed time and space. It is a different kind of light, a divine light, that has rent asunder the darkness of death and has brought to the world the splendour of God, the splendour of Truth and Goodness.

Just as the sun’s rays in springtime cause the buds on the branches of the trees to sprout and open up, so the radiance that streams forth from Christ’s resurrection gives strength and meaning to every human hope, to every expectation, wish and plan. Hence the entire cosmos is rejoicing today, caught up in the springtime of humanity, which gives voice to creation’s silent hymn of praise. The Easter Alleluia, resounding in the Church as she makes her pilgrim way through the world, expresses the silent exultation of the universe and above all the longing of every human soul that is sincerely open to God, giving thanks to him for his infinite goodness, beauty and truth.

“In your resurrection, O Christ, let heaven and earth rejoice.” To this summons to praise, which arises today from the heart of the Church, the “heavens” respond fully: the hosts of angels, saints and blessed souls join with one voice in our exultant song. In heaven all is peace and gladness. But alas, it is not so on earth! Here, in this world of ours, the Easter alleluia still contrasts with the cries and laments that arise from so many painful situations: deprivation, hunger, disease, war, violence. Yet it was for this that Christ died and rose again! He died on account of sin, including ours today, he rose for the redemption of history, including our own. So my message today is intended for everyone, and, as a prophetic proclamation, it is intended especially for peoples and communities who are undergoing a time of suffering, that the Risen Christ may open up for them the path of freedom, justice and peace.

May the Land which was the first to be flooded by the light of the Risen One rejoice. May the splendour of Christ reach the peoples of the Middle East, so that the light of peace and of human dignity may overcome the darkness of division, hate and violence. In the current conflict in Libya, may diplomacy and dialogue take the place of arms and may those who suffer as a result of the conflict be given access to humanitarian aid. In the countries of northern Africa and the Middle East, may all citizens, especially young people, work to promote the common good and to build a society where poverty is defeated and every political choice is inspired by respect for the human person. May help come from all sides to those fleeing conflict and to refugees from various African countries who have been obliged to leave all that is dear to them; may people of good will open their hearts to welcome them, so that the pressing needs of so many brothers and sisters will be met with a concerted response in a spirit of solidarity; and may our words of comfort and appreciation reach all those who make such generous efforts and offer an exemplary witness in this regard.

May peaceful coexistence be restored among the peoples of Ivory Coast, where there is an urgent need to tread the path of reconciliation and pardon, in order to heal the deep wounds caused by the recent violence. May Japan find consolation and hope as it faces the dramatic consequences of the recent earthquake, along with other countries that in recent months have been tested by natural disasters which have sown pain and anguish.

May heaven and earth rejoice at the witness of those who suffer opposition and even persecution for their faith in Jesus Christ. May the proclamation of his victorious resurrection deepen their courage and trust.

Dear brothers and sisters! The risen Christ is journeying ahead of us towards the new heavens and the new earth (cf. Rev 21:1), in which we shall all finally live as one family, as sons of the same Father. He is with us until the end of time. Let us walk behind him, in this wounded world, singing Alleluia. In our hearts there is joy and sorrow, on our faces there are smiles and tears. Such is our earthly reality. But Christ is risen, he is alive and he walks with us. For this reason we sing and we walk, faithfully carrying out our task in this world with our gaze fixed on heaven.

April 24, 2011

Happy Easter Sunday and the meaning of eggs

In case you're wondering why eggs are associated with Easter Sunday, here is something that will enlighten you: Easter Sunday is often celebrated during spring, a time of renewal after winter. Ancient people believed that the world started as a huge egg, while others considered it as a symbol of new life and rebirth. Since Easter Sunday is celebrated every spring, eggs have become symbolic in line with Easter Sunday's essence.

CBCP's Online Visita Iglesia hits surpass 100k mark

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines' "Visita Iglesia" site breached the 100,000 mark shortly after noon of Good Friday as online church visits by Filipino Catholics continued to peak during the Holy Week.

As of 12:15 p.m. Friday, the number of visitors to the CBCP's Visita Iglesia site had reached 100,011.

It was more than double the 47,473 visitors who made a virtual Visita Iglesia last year.

The number of visitors to the site had already reached 88,431 as of 5:10 a.m. Friday, an increase of 30,000 from Thursday morning.

Last year, visits to the site peaked on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday.

So far, the site had shown no signs of slowing down or experiencing technical difficulties due to the high traffic.

The CBCP launched the site last April 1 for overseas Filipino workers who could not make it home, and for Catholics who cannot physically make the church visit.

This year's version features many improvements from its 2010 predecessor, including catecheses and video introductions. — LBG, GMA News

Last Supper was a day earlier, scientist claims

LONDON (AFP) – Christians have long celebrated Jesus Christ's Last Supper on Maundy Thursday but new research released Monday claims to show it took place on the Wednesday before the crucifixion.

Professor Colin Humphreys, a scientist at the University of Cambridge, believes it is all due to a calendar mix-up -- and asserts his findings strengthen the case for finally introducing a fixed date for Easter.

Humphreys uses a combination of biblical, historical and astronomical research to try to pinpoint the precise nature and timing of Jesus's final meal with his disciples before his death.

Researchers have long been puzzled by an apparent inconsistency in the Bible. Read More...

MMDA and Philippine National Police (PNP)- Ready for Holy Week Traffic

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced that more than 1,000 traffic enforcers will be enforced starting April 20.

These enforcers will be assigned to major thoroughfares, particularly EDSA and other exit points of Metro Manila, as part of MMDA’s Metro Alalay Semana Santa.

The Philippine National Police, meanwhile, will deploy 135,000 officers throughout the country and 5,000 in Metro Manila.

Authorities will also be manning bus and jeepney terminals, airports and shopping malls in anticipation of Holy Week.

MMDA Assistant General Manager for Operations Emerson Carlos reiterated that the suspension of the number coding scheme would begin tomorrow, April 19 (Tuesday), to allow motorists to leave the metropolis anytime. The lifting of the trafficreduction scheme applies to all national roads, except those in Makati City.

Number coding will resume on Monday, April 25, next week.
