The nice thing is it sort of makes each purchase of Lion a Family Pack, by default, since you can install App Store purchase on all machines using the same ID.

Great... just have to download 3+ gigabytes every time I want to install it.

And what about a big resolution to support big TV screen. With an airplay like to output the mac screen to the plasma, LCD, LED or DEL TV.

I guess I can see Apple's point. But, aren't all tablets going to have a similar style and interface? It would seem like there can be only marginal differences in a touch screen interface.

Not really. Google is actually pretty different from iOS. It's Samsung who chose to edit the interface and all those icons to look like iPhone. That's why Apple is going straight after Samsung. Android OS has some similarities but overall they are pretty different.

I just don't really see how anyone should be surprised. It should be totally obvious to anyone who watches the smart phone market that Android would easily surpass IOS--they are indeed everywhere and I'm sure when it comes time to get a new phone--those with no preconceived ideas on what they want will walk out of the store with some kind of Android. Most who go in looking for an iPhone will probably leave with one. As long as Apple--and their shareholders are happy, I don't think it really matters.

    Just preferred?

That only means an Option right? Still going to be DVD/USB Stick?

Because if it was App Store only, what about people with Leopard or earlier?

The article's not that long of a read.

I guess I can wait till then. But do you think they will annouce at WWDC, and then say Shipping soon or something, like they did in january? It's anybody's guess. They are due a refresh. And with Merom already shipping it's a 50-50 chance Steve will do that. I'm saying September 12 Paris is the latest. WWDC August 7 is certainly possible. I have no clue if he will or not. Anyone else here have a clue? If so, they're probably pulling it out of their butt. :D  :p ;)

Or a banner for Paris Expo? Hope not.
They are not setting up for the Paris expo for a long time. There is no chance of this being for Paris, IMO. :)

I can understand Apple's concern here it could give the impression to an uneducated user that it is OK to jailbreak their phone since they are being encouraged to by what would seem like a legitimate source. I don't think it's much of an issue for Scion owners though as they are probably used to sub-par performance.

I doubt that's really Apple's issue. I'm sure they're more concerned about getting their 33% of everything iPhone.

Any lawyers out there? Isn't this bordering on breaking some monopolizing or anti-competition laws?

No, I don't understand it that way. I understand that each group (one if we stay together, multiple if we split up) designates a leader. We do ALL of our conversation in the thread. Only the group leaders communicate the wishes of their group to the Game Gods via PM. They may take the consensus of the group, or they may implement decisions unilaterally without regard to group majority.

Correct in all aspects, except the leader posts the action in the thread, in bold. No PM.

Quite true, I'm pretty sure it was. But at least it's possible somehow.

I don't see how Apple could get away with not having a way to make an install backup. The recovery partition is not good enough. It's a fact of life that hard drives die.

Not to mention why would I want to waste space on a recovery partition anyhow ? ;)

I do hope Apple gets a clue from how the different Linux/BSD distributions have been doing it. Just give us something to make our own installation media as a download, not some glorified app installer.

If they do, great, if they don't, I'll buy a physical copy.

Except that Apple has typically released only the 15 inch model before later introducing the 17 (and 12 when they existed) when they do major updates. Witness the introduction of the Al case and the Intel switch. Of course it matters whether this is a major update. If, like the iMacs, there is not a major case redesign and it is just a processor bump then expect them to be released simultaneously. But if there is a change in case, I would be surprised (pleasantly though) if the 17 came out at the same time. You need to brush up on your Mac history.

Original Aluminum PowerBook G4 was only 17" for 8 long months (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/stats/powerbook_g4_1.0_17.html) introduced January 7, 2003 at MacWorld Expo SF by Steve Jobs. It ran at 1GHz and had two USB 1.1 ports. :p

The first 15" PM G4 in an Aluminum case running @ 1GHz & 1.25GHz (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/stats/powerbook_g4_1.25_15.html) with two USB 2 ports didn't appear until Paris Apple Expo September 16 also introduced by Steve Jobs in his Paris keynote that morning. At that same time the 17" lost the USB 1.1 ports and went USB 2 also as well as to a top speed of 1.33GHz (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/stats/powerbook_g4_1.33_17.html). Only 3 short years ago today. ;)

So there is no predictable introduction order. But this time it MUST be the whole line because of the C2D leap. ;)

This story broke 5 minutes ago and I'm already over it... Who cares if Apple wants to use something they think is new and revolutionary? Your opinion isn't going to stop them. While you're over here thinking "I can't do bootcamp with ARM" Apple is thinking "Bootcamp will be obsolite when we get done here" :apple:

You must really love the stuff you write. You must also love the sound your voice makes when it talks. Since clearly what we write will have no impact whatsoever, why bother even having a forum? Hell, why even write a post like that?
Get that iPhone out of your ass, seriously.

You know how long it takes me to create an ARM version of my code on the Mac App Store?

    Two minutes.

What do you want, a gold star? A cookie?

Your app is prolly simple enough that you could do that. Consider more complex apps such as games and video-editing that require extensive use of the x86 architecture. That's the real problem.

And in all seriousness, that is the real issue. Switching from x86 to ARM RISC is a really big problem because the benefit of x86 is that so much work has been done on it, porting Windows apps and/or games is simply a software coding issue as opposed to hardware. Even if ARM had comparable processes to x86 to compensate to some degree, that's still another series of steps to go through.

And there's no real reason or benefit for them to switch to ARM. They have an incredibly solid partnership with Intel (they got Thunderbolt first, for Pete's sake), and what devices that could use ARM-like processors are already built in-house. If they really wanted a low-cost processor for laptops (again, no beneficial reason), they could just go for the AMD's Trinity platform with Fusion APUs. They already have Radeon GPUs in their entire lineup, don't see why they can't switch. Or even better, just build x86 chips in-house like they do with the A series.

Sounds just like some bloke from Apple. Snow Leopard's the last of the true desktop OS's.

Really? In what sick and twisted world are you living? What's so very different in Lion that it's "not true desktop OS"? Launchpad the end of all?

I got a question ... is the MacBook & MBP batteries Li-Ion or Li-Polymer? If the former then what i want MOST in the MBP is Li-Polymer and really fold the polymers and compress them to get a higher density of energy for longer battery life.

    > The next generation of the MBP I'd really like to see the Intel technology for sub display (not unlike that on flip cellphones) to display AudioCD or running app information on the display or AirPort Ex hotspots within range (SSID, Signal Strength, VoIP signals etc). I'd also like to see a higher resolution - that maintains the same or much higher focus and zoom+Auto Focus - iSight thats built in and somewhat rotable (maybe somehow in the sell without external finger control).

    > Magnesium or some kind of Metal Polymer combination that is very resistance or displaces heat efficiently but absorbing enough heat for hours of DVD, Video editing on our laps without burning them. Something thats much like ceramic tiles and how they displace heat efficiently.

    > Me ... I'll settle for minimum 256MB video memory for ALL MBP and the built to order 512; and built to order 128MB on the Mac Books.

Question why do the old G4 powermacs of 933mhz or lower STILL selling highly used for such a high price - their almost obsolute in their abilities compared to new hardware. as an example on another forum sight someone is trying to sell a Dual 1Ghz QuickSilver for $1000 1.5GB total memory capacity (not that its filled with that much). Isnt this ridiculous?

I am new to this forum, and a true novice with tomtom and car kits. I just downloaded the application onto my iPhone, and then setup the car kit. It works fine. What I have is probably what sounds like the dumbest of questions:

What is the car kit's resistance to cold temperatures? I live in Cleveland, OH and if I live the mount in the car for a whole day during winter, will the chips or anything be damaged?

Do you advice dismounting the kit every time I park for a few hours, and/or for the night? My garage is not heated.

    Thanks!

I use to live in Minneapolis so I understand these kind of concerns, but I'm really not sure. My instinct is to say take it in overnight, but what a pain! It gets pretty cold where you are, but not bitter cold like in MN. Why not email TomTom and ask them by sending the temperature range for your area?

Just to give you guys some perspective:

I ordered my custom Blackbook two days ago, ship date is 9/22, arrival date 9/29.

Basically, I got sick of waiting for Merom for the macbook and I couldn't justify the price jump to the MBP. In retrospect, I wish I wouldn't have waited so long but I'm glad I ordered when I did.

Sidenote of interest: I used a student developer discount on my purchase of a macbook and black 8 gig Nano. I was amazed to see the discount applied to the Nano as well, saving me another $30!

Ha ha! Way to go Apple!!!! Kill the competition any way you can!!

Apple is doing everyone a favor saving them from the mistake of getting a RIM tablet.

I'm sure Apple appreciates your enthusiasm to kill the competition. I have no doubt they will repay your gratitude by allowing you to pay more for their products.
