Illinois city

Clue in this morning's crossword puzzle:  Illinois city.

My first thought, of course, was Chicago... but that was 1 too many letters for the answer.  Hmmph.

So I continued with other clues so I could have some hints.

Strike callers:  umps (now I had p was the first letter of the Illinois city).

Tear:  rip (now I had the i as 2nd to last letter).

Pronounce:  say (ok, moving right along, the a is the last letter).

Taking a stab at it:  Peoria.

Peoria????  Really?  In Illinois? I thought Peoria was in Iowa.

Whatever.  Like I'd ever go there anyway.

Oh, the years of living outside Illinois are starting to take their toll.  ha!

p.s. I forgot to mention a week or so ago.  I have no idea how we got around to talking about Illinois sports teams .... oh, now I remember .... the Fighting Illini were in a bowl game recently and we were in a bar.  I looked at the TV and asked "is that Ron Zook (former Gators coach)?"

The reply was:  Yes, he's coaching University of Illinois now.  And Peter pronounced the 's'.
I.almost.died.

"All these years of me learning about Boston sports and you still don't know not to pronounce the 's' in my home state. Please, please, stoppit."

(Above is the abbreviated version of the conversation.  You can be sure of that.)
