IDW Launches GODZILLA: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS eBay Auction To Aide Japan

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: IDW Publishing

Due to the incredible response to IDW's recent promotional idea of customising the cover for the first issue of "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters" to feature any comic book shop that ordered 500 copies or more (some 70 shops responded) the release date had to be pushed back to April 30th.

Now, IDW is offering a chance for Godzilla fans to own every single variant cover, 83 in all, via an eBay auction the proceeds of which will be donated to aide in Japanese disaster relief.

Here is the press release:

Godzilla fans can get each and every one of the 83 variant issues IDW created for the first printing of our brand new GODZILLA: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #1, and it’s for a good cause!

This March, IDW unleashed an unprecedented promotion in the comics market. A chance for retailers to have their stores smashed by Godzilla! When the final count was done, there were 83 covers of this landmark issue. Through this auction, one lucky reader will become the proud owner of each of those 83 variant issues, while donating much-needed funds to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

All comics are in mint, unread condition. The auction includes:

75 “Smash Your Store” retailer exclusive covers

Both regular covers, one each by Alex Ross and Eric Powell

The rare Eric Powell retailer incentive cover

The WonderCon exclusive cover

The four, never-before-seen IDW covers, signed by the employees featured on each cover

GODZILLA: KINGDOM OF MONSTERS #1 is written by Eric Powell and Tracy Marsh, with art by Phil Hester, and covers by Powell and Alex Ross. In this debut issue, the King of the Monsters rises again, and for the first time in comics, he’s bringing lots of other beloved Toho monsters with him in one destructive saga.

Learn more over at the Godzilla Comic Covers Charity Auction for Japan Relief page on eBay!

God knows I want to get my hands on all of those! Unfortunately I'm just a blogger ..... and not a doctor or lawyer, so such purchases are beyond my limited wallet.

Unless, you would want to buy all of those comics, then give them to me for Christmas ..... or my birthday ....?

Is Legendary Pictures About To Hand GODZILLA Over To Del Toro?

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Bloody Disgusting

The recent tragedy in Japan has forced Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures to rethink two of their upcoming films that deal with both radiation and giant mutant monsters ..... that were spawned by said radiation. Namely "Pacific Rim" and "Godzilla" which now may be facing script rewrites and even possibly sharing the same director ..... that is if one of the films gets scrapped entirely.

It has been leaked by a source close to both projects that the two studios have asked film maker Guillermo del Toro who has just signed on to helm the giant monster film "Pacific Rim" to rewrite the script so that the film no longer takes place in Japan. According to that source, who spilled the beans to the Bloody Disgusting website, del Toro was not too keen on the idea and may tell the suits to pound sand.

The fun doesn't stop there however. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures are also considering putting "Rim" on the shelf, maybe permanently, in favor of having del Toro take over "Godzilla 3D" instead. Again, the film maker has apparently turned his nose up at that idea as well. Probably due in large part to the fact that "Godzilla 3D" already has a director,
Gareth Edwards, who took over the project in January.

This doesn't sound like very good news to all the legions of fans out there who have been waiting patiently for over a year for this new American Godzilla movie to get rolling.

It looks like there may be stormy seas ahead if the studios shun Edwards and del Toro walks.

Of course there is no need to panic yet, "Godzilla 3D" is still moving forward ..... slowly.

As an extra bonus for all you Godzilla nuts out there I have included three of the upcoming covers for IDW's "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters". I really love the artwork for both issues #3 and #4 with Godzilla, Rodan and the often misunderstood Anguirus.

Your iPad, iPhone And iPod Touch Are About To Become Infested

Source: IDW Publishing

IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the release of INFESTATION comics to Apple iOS users. Available as both a stand-alone app and within the IDW Comics storefront, readers can now enjoy the entire INFESTATION crossover event on their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.

INFESTATION is the hit comic series that infects the TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE, Ghostbusters, and Star Trek universes with legions of undead. This dimension-spanning storyline begins with a specially priced 40-page story by writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (The Thanos Imperative), and artist David Messina (True Blood). Something goes horribly awry in IDW's Zombies vs Robots universe, threatening to tear some of pop culture's biggest realities asunder. This unparalleled, never-before-seen event is now available digitally through the Apple App Store. The INFESTATION Comics app is made for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Readers can view full size pages, or read panel-by-panel simply by turning the iPhone or iPod touch horizontally.

"We're excited to bring out INFESTATION as a stand-alone comics app," stated Jeff Webber, IDW's director of ePublishing. "While all of the issues are also available in our IDW Comics app for our regular readers, creating a stand-alone INFESTATION Comics app allows us to introduce the whole event to fans of the individual brands. This way, casual readers of TRANSFORMERS, Star Trek, G.I. JOE and Ghostbusters digital comics can see what this big comics cross-over event is all about!"

IDW's INFESTATION app includes free digital-only versions of the preview edition, an issue checklist, a cover gallery and character designs. Readers will also be able to get the 40-page kick-off story, INFESTATION #1, for only $0.99. New issues of the series will be added over the course of March and April, culminating in the grande finale and a special TOP SECRET digital-only cross over.

"This will be one huge surprise for comic fans everywhere," added Webber. "All we can say right now is, bring a life vest!"

Godzilla To Stomp On 70 Comic Book Stores This March

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Comic Book Resources

Chris Mowry of IDW Publishing came up with one hell of a great idea to promote the upcoming release of "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters" (formally Godzilla: Monster World), why not create a special variant cover for every comic book retailer who orders more than 500 copies showing their store being stepped on by the monster?

Needless to say the suits at IDW thought Mowry's idea was fantastic and sent the word out to comic book shops around the globe expecting a dozen or so to take them up on their offer. What the publisher didn't expect, however, was that some 70 such retailers would want their comic shop immortalised under the weight of Godzilla's feet.

This gave the art department just a mere two weeks to design the 70 unique covers, which they managed to do just in time to get the books shipped out.

"Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters" will be IDW's biggest single issue launch ever and in all the issue will feature a grand total of 80 different variant covers, including the exclusive Comic Con version pictured above, which shows IDW and it's employees getting stomped on.

As you probably already know, "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters" will not only feature Japan's most popular movie star, but also Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah as well, characters who until now had never appeared in comic books on this side of the Pacific.

Look for this new title on comic book store shelves at the end of March!

More Info On GODZILLA MONSTER WORLD From IDW

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Pop Culture Zoo / Mark Torchia

Last October IDW Publishing announced that they had struck a deal with Toho studios to bring the world's most popular monster, "Godzilla", back to comics in the United States. According to IDW the publishing company not only secured the rights to Godzilla, but also Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah as well, characters who until now had never appeared in comic books on this side of the Pacific.

As you probably already know, this will not be the monster's" first comic book series here in America. Way back in 1977/78, Marvel Comics published the 24 issue series "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" which was written by Doug Moench and illustrated by Herb Trimpe. That series featured Godzilla fighting both brand-new monsters and some of the comic book publisher's most famous heroes like Spider Man and the Fantastic Four. Likewise in the 1990s Dark Horse Comics continued the "King of the Monsters" label, again with stories about Godzilla fighting new monsters and an elite combat unit commissioned to destroy him.

In this decade, graphic artist Todd Tennant began publishing a great online comic series called "Godzilla 94" that is based on the unused Sony movie script by Rossio and Elliott.

Efforts by Tennant, and recently Blue Water Comics, to secure the rights to Godzilla for either a "Godzilla 94" comic book or a new comic book series, were ignored by Toho (who would not return phone calls or emails on the subject) which is a strong indication that the IDW deal has been in the works for some time.

More information about this new Godzilla comic, which I forgot to mention is called "Godzilla, Monster World", comes in the form of a press release that IDW just sent out to the media:

IDW Publishing and Toho Co., Ltd. are excited to announce the return to comics for the biggest star in motion pictures! Kicking off in March, GODZILLA®: MONSTER WORLD offers fans the world over the first ongoing comic series in years. GODZILLA® will be joined by many other monsters throughout the series, including MOTHRA™, KING GHIDORAH™, RODAN™ and more that have never before been featured in an American comic book series alongside King of the Monsters™.

“Godzilla has been gone from comics for too long” said Yukio Kotaki of Toho. “And to have it return with other monsters is simply very exciting.”

Bringing these fearsome creatures back to comics is a larger-than-life creative team, led by co-writers Eric Powell (The Goon) and Tracy Marsh. Artist Phil Hester (Kevin Smith’s The Green Hornet) will capture every monster moment. The series will feature not one but two painted covers, offered on a 50/50 basis: Eric Powell will provide a gatefold wraparound cover featuring many beloved Toho monsters, and fan-favorite artist Alex Ross contributed an imposing image of Godzilla®. Powell has also painted a separate incentive cover to herald the debut issue’s launch.

“To be able to launch a Godzilla series that features many fan-favorite Toho monsters never before seen in comics is gratifying enough,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer. “But to do it with the guiding hand and brush of Eric Powell — as perfectly suited a creator as I could’ve hoped to come aboard here – along with Hester, Marsh, and Ross, is about as monstrous a line-up as I could’ve ever hoped for. What’s more, this is just the first series to come in the line. The next one out of the gates features multiple Eisner-nominees and winners handling the creative, so we’re well and truly just getting started here.”

In GODZILLA®: MONSTER WORLD, a full-scale apocalypse is brewing. The monsters are a force of nature whose attacks can be no more predicted or rationalized than a lightning strike. There will be no clean-cut heroes with perfectly chiseled chins and capes billowing in the wind; only ordinary human beings struggling desperately to survive in a world gone mad.

With an impressive cast of monsters both old and new, IDW’s series will treat fans to both familiar themes and original takes on the pop culture legends that have stomped, smashed, and fought their way across movie screens for over four decades.

Adding to great creators and a monster story, IDW is also offering killer retailer specials for GODZILLA®: MONSTER WORLD #1, including a one-of-a-kind, hand-drawn Eric Powell sketch cover. Plus, retailers will be eligible for their very own cover – featuring Godzilla stomping their comic store.

GODZILLA: MONSTER WORLD #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in comic stores in March 2011. Diamond order code JAN11 0463.
