BTW...what is the high end Merom processor? Is there a lower end processor? If there is the higher, faster one would go into the MBP while the lower end C2D is in the MB so you still have a discrepancy that warrants a higher price point. :cool:Top Merom is 2.33GHz and should be standard on both top 15" and 17" models - def the 17". That's why the 2GHz Merom MacBook will be such a strategicly positioned superior product for the money and why the mini will still be crippled even when it switches to C2D at the same speeds. 2.33GHz is only 16.5% faster - not so much that you would even notice most of the time.
Only reason Merom MBP may not be announced tomorrow is for marketing reasons - not because it isn't ready. While they continue to manufacture them and build up a large inventory, we may have to endure these other product announcements so Apple can get all the heat focused on them until later this month when they can have the new MBP deployed worldwide in large quantities and be able to say "on sale today." and "Let the feeding frenzy begin."
On the other hand, because of Apple-Expo Paris, I think the MBP still has a better than 50% chance of being introduced tomorrow. Three years ago they introduced the revoluitonary Aluminium 15" PowerMac G4's @1.25GHz with USB 2 and FW 800 for the first time in a mobile Mac. I bought one a month later when Panther was introduced.

I'm ready to ditch my PEBL along with my RAZR if they design a easy to use stylish phone that will sync with my contacts.
A full size touchscreen but a sleek design, hmmm....
What I would like:
- 4gig for mp3's
- sync with my contacts
The rest I don't care for that much, unless they implement it really good offcourse. The camera is integrated rather well in the pebl and razr so it doesn't annoy me, but I never use it anyways (maybe because the quality is crap :) )

Believe it or not though we are still gigabit to our SAN and while Fiber Channel may be awesome in this scenario do you not think Thunderbolt would have the throughput for say, a DAS box?
Direct Attached Storage is a pain to manage : "Hey, XY server needs more storage space... oh wait, the array is full, we need to purchase a new array for it... too bad we can't use YZ's array which only has 2 bays occupied...".
Centralized storage arrays with LUNs solves all of these issues. Running out of storage ? Present a new LUN and just plug it in to whatever volume manager you use and grow your existing filesystem, all with 0 downtime or even having to physically connect anything to the box.
For data centers, Thunderbolt is a non-contender.

Actually, YOU win. The United States provides for patents to "promote" and "further" advancements in the things that we all come here to discuss everyday. One can argue the merits of such a system but that is one of the purposes of the patent laws. Basically, incentive to make the world a better place for all.
Take away the incentive and there might not be as much innovation.

Oh man! That would be great... but I have a hard time seeing Apple do this. I'd be happy with like a "basic" version that'd be free... and for those who want the whole package, some sort of fee... but not $99 per year. Only time will tell I guess.

You might be in Bazaro Universe? Look at the 1 week, 2 week, 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, 1 year and 2 year trends. AAPL is looking pretty sweet.

Multitasking is also quite nice. One of the first apps I downloaded was a (free) great radio app, and as I was listening to the radio I intuitively started web browsing and going back and forth between a few other apps and it wasn't until I received and replied to a message from a friend that it occurred to me that I was having a really cool and full mobile computing experience. I feel that as iOS and Android (Honeycomb) stand right now, Android offers a lot more potential to serve my needs. .
Everything you described in your multitasking experience would have worked on the iPad as well...

The iPad 1 may have had a very slight delay reopening one of the apps if you directly flipped through all 4, but the experience on the iPad 2 was instant.

Unless they can do it at a very low cost, I cant see them doing it at all. The rackmount market for the mac was minuscule with pretty much just specialist research and university/college networks using them. It would probably cost a lot in R&D to redesign the Pro, when it doesn't really need it. Its a functional design which is in keeping with the rest of the range.
As a Pro user, I'd LOVE to see new updates, but they should really be advances that you would expect from the Pro range:
- Better support for graphics cards
- Advancements to processor usage (4x CPU's for example)
- RAID card support
- Thunderbolt
- Fiber

Generally there is little NEED to use Macs in a server environment as its pretty much always possible to do it with Linux, and some cases Windows. I'm not denying that it has its uses, but the size of this market has made it impractical.

This is good news for future Macbook owners. I'm interested in when the iMac will get Conroe. A friend of mine is switching from Windows and wants the iMac but is waiting for Conroe in the iMac. I only hope they go with the desktop processor in the iMac and not Merom since he's not interested in the mobile processor in his desktop.
Well, hopefully the iMac will be updated sooner than the portables. Conroe is out and available in quantities now where as Merom won't be as available in quantities until the end of this month.

I don�t see why a 20% increase in speed is going to rock the boat. Especially if it�s in the MBP. So if it is ready for shipment I don�t see any advantage in waiting for the MBP line to upgrade.
I guess I�ll have to do some research about the battery performance.
Noone knows what Steve Jobs will do, but I think he had been roper-doping long enough with the G3 and G4. What 6 years with the same G4? He needs to come out swinging while Apple still has a strong brand name from the iPod.
I hope to see some changes. The last 5 years have been so slow that it hasn�t been worth keeping up with.

I don't believe this report. How hard could it be for RIM to acquire the 100,000 screens they can expect to sell? This is just an excuse for the delay for them to work out the software bugs. Sure Apple has a lot of factories going day and night to produce iPads. But the early reports were only in the 60% of manufacturing capacity. Maybe it is more, but it isn't like RIM needs to make one million of these devices a month. Seriously, 100,000 will be plenty for the first month of U.S. sales. Maybe if enterprises really get on board, then sales will ramp up. But businesses are going to run three months of tests before they role out the big blackberries for the staff.

So I just bought a new 4 core Sandy Bridge iMac tonight and now this news breaks. Is ARM actually building anything in any way shape or form that competes with the Intel X86 stuff right now or is this just vaporware at this point?

Huh? If they aren't making any money for it now (with relatively few people paying for the service) how would it make sense to give it away for free (with many many more people not paying for it?)
Because it would be a good marketing move, as another benefit of using a mac. It would have a "halo effect" as another way to get people in to the apple store. Obviously, not as much as the iPhone's "halo," but another bit of sales pitch couldn't hurt.

Of course they will move to ARM, everyone will. Google is allready running their data centres on ARM based servers, Windows 8 will run on ARM as well, Apple is investing huge amount of money into their A4, A5 chips. The main problem of computers nowadays is power efficiency and not computing power, because most of the computers allready are overpowerd for what their users usually do with them.
