Acting on a complaint lodged by the brother of a suspect arrested in connection with the arson attack on the Lanka-e news office, the police on Thursday (31) produced Editor of Lanka e-news Bennet Rupasinghe before the Kaduwela Magistrate, who ordered the him remanded till April 7.
Rupasinghe was detained when he arrived at Wellampitiya police station after being summoned by the police.
Police told the Magistrate that Rupasinghe had threatened the suspect’s brother with death unless he withdrew an earlier statement attributed to him.
The Inter-University Students’ Federation condemned the police action. Convenor of the Federation Sanjeeva Bandara, issued a statement alleging that the government had arrested Rupesinghe, whereas those responsible for a spate of attacks targeting the media remained at large.
Two persons arrested in connection with the attack are on bail.
