Mousaka is a traditional Greek dish. I made it one day last week and had the leftovers for lunch the next day. I shared it with my friend and she asked for the recipe so, here it is:
MOUSAKA:
Meat Sauce
500 grams beef mince
3 tablespoons olive old
1 onion, chopped
1 cup tomato sauce
2 tomato, chopped
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1 cup grated tasty cheese
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1/2 white wine
1 cup water
3 eggplants, 3 zucchini
Salt, pepper and nutmeg
White Sauce
2 cups milk
1/2 cup flour
4 tablespoons butter
2 eggs
Salt, white pepper and grated nutmeg
Brown onions in olive oil. Add beef mince, mixing constantly until mixture becomes crumbly. Add chopped tomatoes and tomato sauce, wine, water, salt pepper, parsley and nutmeg. Cover and cook for 45 minutes over low heat.
In the meantime, cut the eggplants 2 cms thick, salted to remove excess moisture for 30 minutes. Cut zucchini in the same way. I grilled the vegetable until brown on both sides.
Prepare a thick white sauce with milk, flour, butter, salt, pepper and grated nutmeg. Add eggs.
Arrange eggplants in a shallow pan with a few bread crumbs. Add vegetables, meat sauce and white sauce in layers. Top with white sauce and grated tasty cheese. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and bake in the over at 170'C for 45 minutes or until top is golden.
It is also nice to add some cooked slice potatoes as well.
Please leave me a comment after you try this. Enjoy......!
