Giving Hearts

Not really Valentine's Day gifts! I'm taking another online workshop with Jude called Whispering Heart. This is a mini workshop covering only hearts. You would be surprised to see how many ways you can produce hearts on cloth. This is my first project for the class. It's in a nine-patch format with heart applique and embroidery. You can do whatever you want using heart shapes. My next piece of cloth will be a heart sampler, so there will be many hearts to show you in the next couple of posts. 

I decided to make this piece as a gift for the host family I will be staying with in Japan. The piece is made totally by hand using all recycled vintage silk kimono except for the background fabric which is cotton remnant from Reverse Art Truck. 

A close-up shot of the prairie points. The fringes are handmade as well. I named this cloth Hugs and Kisses. I posted on the class blog SEW you can see work from the other students posted there too.

Flying heart on pin cushion. The woven base was done on another workshop 'cloth to cloth' with Jude. It was handy to have some of these woven bases lying around for when I need it. On this occasion I needed to make a quick gift for my 200th. blog follower. I added the heart, button, tail, stitched it, filled it and it is ready! I added a few pieces of Shibori dyed fabric in the parcel as well. I do hope you like your gifts Gilly!

Happy Valentine's Day and Hearts

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! Hope everyone is having a nice day with your loved ones. Hearts seem to be my thing these days so I can't let it pass without showing you more hearts I've been making lately. I woke up to find a cup of coffee and roses on my bed side table this morning. DH brings me coffee every morning as a way of getting me out of bed, but not with roses! Thanks my sweet dear!
The roses are from our own garden. There aren't many left due to dry and hot weather we had lately. This weekend though we are blessed with plenty of rain!

Back to my hearts. If you remembered I posted about this heart once before when I took part in Friday Night Sewing Party. On one of my visits to an op-shop (thrift shop) I picked up vintage cushions for only $0.50 each. I've already got the idea that I would look for items with embroidery on them to make more hearts. These cushions are just what I wanted. They are made from a mix of linen and cotton. The embroidery looks faded and used, but it does not matter. I fuzzy cut around the embroidery and got six hearts out of one cushion. I used every bit of it including the two covered buttons from the back.

Here are my six beautiful hearts. I only completed two so far. After it was stuffed I put handmade cord around the seam from the top, all around and ended up with a loop for hanging. I'm so very pleased with my hearts. Have you noticed that the embroidery is in a different position on each heart? I think it makes them more interesting. I can see a vintage tree next Christmas...!

Valentine Sewing Party: My Hearts

Right now I have a weakness to making heart shapes. I signed up for the Valentine Sewing Party this Saturday that Kelly & Joan are hosting. I have one project in mind that I have to make as a gift and that happens to be another one of my favorite hearts. You guessed right! Heart from my heart ornaments pattern I made at Christmas. I can't seem to stop making them. I think after Valentine's Day is over I will move on to something else. If you don't want to miss out the Valentine Sewing Party check-out the list here.

This is what I made this morning, blue heart with Oriental theme. After I pieced the front I stitched over it using Sashiko style stitching. It is for a gift, but I can't tell you at the moment for whom I'm making it for. If you get the blues, this is a perfect project to start. It's another of my UFO that I only have to put a border on and it will be ready to quilt. I went through the blues in my life and starting this quilt had helped me a lot "Quilt Heals". Sorry no pattern for this one. I made it up as I went...!

It is Valentine season after all. I thought I would show you the first heart quilt I ever made. I made this quilt before I became a quilter. I found the American Country Folk Crafts book at my children's school fate. The cover attracted me and after looking inside I ended up buying it. I didn't know how to appliqué or anything, but my sewing skills came in handy at times.

I didn't have quilting fabrics either, but I had lot of leftover Liberty and other fabrics from my dress making so I used them for the hearts. The background fabric was weaved by my friend's mother in the North East of Thailand. It's 100% homespun silk. I love this quilt and I use it sometimes as a table throw.

I know that signing up for the Valentine Sewing Party would makes me bring out my UFOs to think about finishing them SOON! Thanks to Kelly and Joan for organizing this fun event; I throughly enjoyed it.

Heartfelt to bushfires sufferers

I made this heart for Valentines Day, but now I would like to dedicated to the bushfire sufferers in Victoria. My work colleague had lost his home in Kinglake. He and his dog are safe, thanks goodness. I cannot comprehend how much damaged the bushfires had caused.

No one can prepared for this kind of situation. If you were asked to pack a bag to escape the fires what would you take? Our whole life is in the homes, people were saying that you take your jewely and photos! For me I would take my quilts and something I can work on to calm my nerve.

I have received many emails and phone calls from families and friends in Australia and overseas to make sure that we are okay. This one email from Ingrid I would like to publish and share with you:

Good Morning Natima...I can't believe the scale of these fires...and it is scary when you say none of you is really safe!!! I think we all as a Nation want to help...but feel so helpless at the same time...makes me realize that it is not in our hands...and please, if you do need (God forbid) to evacuate Victoria know that there is a space here for you if you have to travel up to NSW to escape it all...

Myny thanks to all, I really do appreciated your concern and offered us a place if we needed. I am a lucky one and like you I would like to offer my help, but feel so helpless. I would wait to give help directly to our colleague who had lost his house. There is going to be a collection for him here at my work.
