Do you honestly think people can't tell the difference between aluminum and steel. The metals are very different. The benefit of the liquidmetal is not in the feel per se but the strength to weight ratio. Like titanium. It is a premium for outdoor cookware because its as strong a steel but light as aluminum. If the MBP's are going to get much smaller then they need less of a body - liquidmetal would help. Also, if you've every dropped your laptop then having it bounce back would be nice.
No, I don't think people can spontaneously tell the difference between aluminium and (stainless) steel. I'm talking about people with no knowledge about metallurgy whatsoever. Believe me, they have no idea. They don't know what is lighter and what is more durable. If I told people that my macbook is made out of silver they would believe me.
And I don't doubt that Liquid Metal will offer new possibilities in matters of manufacturing, so that the macbook's body can be made thinner while keeping it's durability. But my point really is, that people here are expecting it to be some kind of magic material that will completely change the experience of using their macbook. They think it will be different from aluminium as aluminium is from plastic. It's just another kind of metal, almost indistinguishable from any other metal. I hope you understand what I mean.

Please read the entire post, think about it, and then respond.

I never said we should allow anyone to die - I said the exact opposite... that it is our job to be compassionate and to try and help in any way we can. My point was that there are certain aspects of the culture in African society which have bene ingrained in their way of live far longer than any western culture has even been in existence. So to think we can change that with any amount of money or education is naive.

We can and should try to save lives, and that is always a good thing. The African people are human beings, no better or worse than Americans or Brits or any other culture, color, or country. But at the end of the day, it comes down to the age-old question of whether it's our job, responsibility, or even our right to impose our culture and belief system on another. I'm merely saying that these people have chosen to develop their culture in a certain way, and perhaps they need something other than our system of education to change that. They need time... and unfortunately with that time will come deaths. I would never say or imply that innocent people should die; I merely am saying that perhaps our efforts are misguided, and that these people have something going on that's far deeper than can be fixed with education or funding. Maybe they need a long period of time where they evolve at their own pace into what their culture deems an appropriate solution.

The problem that people are having with your line of thinking is that it was used in the mid to late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to essentially justify the "superiority" of Europe and Europeans over the rest of the world. It was called Social Darwinism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_darwinism)...

A variation of your argument was also used to justify African slavery, as well as the sterilization of Jewish people in 1930s Germany. It was, and still is, a very dangerous line of thinking, so I would not be surprised by the reaction that you are receiving.

I seen it as more of a mid model refresh.
TECHNICALLY been the same since 2008.

If you mean the aluminum design, that was actually way back in 2007.

I just assumed that being 64-bit or 32-bit was a system wide principle, either or.
A 64-bit operating system is one that provides 64-bit virtual addresses to its processes. It requires a CPU that supports 64-bit virtual addressing. The C2D is such a CPU, and runs 64-bit code and O/S.

These humongous 64-bit virtual addresses need to be translated to a physical address to reach the actual memory. The 64-bit CPU has a list of pages of physical memory, and tables to map a program's virtual address to a physical page. Once that mapping is done, the 64-bit virtual address can be used as a "synonym" for the actual physical address. The mapping is per process - two processes can use the same virtual address without interference - the same virtual address refers to different physical pages depending on the process which is using it.

In the case of the Napa(32) chipset, the chipset only has 32 address lines, and cannot physically handle more than 4 GiB of RAM. Some of those addresses are reserved for I/O purposes (such as the 256 MiB that is mapped to the VRAM of the video card).

If you plug 4 GiB of RAM into a Napa(32) system, you'll "lose" the memory that is over-mapped by I/O space. For example, right now I'm typing from a dual-Xeon (32-bit Netburst) with 4 GiB of RAM installed. Windows reports that I have 3520 MiB of memory. I've "lost" a half GiB due to these I/O space mappings. (My 4 GiB Yonah laptop reports 3.1 GiB available - PCIe systems seem to reserve a lot more memory for I/O than PCI-X systems.)

Apple is apparently saying that 3 GiB is the limit, so that they don't have to explain PCIe I/O bus mapping to people calling to complain that OSX isn't using all 4 GiB.
    ____________

This virtual-to-physical mapping has some other implications:

Doesn't sound like Dmac would really care. After all, the other guy is at fault because they didn't have the common courtesy to move the car.

Exactly. Some states have prominent signs that vehicles can only be in the left lane only for passing.

There is no real-world solution to this problem as long as Apple insists on vetting every app and update. No company can be perfect in such a vast (many thousands a week) undertaking, so every developer runs the risk that his app will be caught in some bizarre limbo while an easily-fixed bug sits out there slowly damaging the developer's name. Unfortunately, there are only two solutions to this problem: customer pressure for Apple to reduce its oversight (followed by complaints by those apparently scared of having to vet applications on their own), or lawsuits. I suspect the latter is the only plausible solution.

This is the most credible of the iPhone rumors I've seen so far-- in no small part because it didn't have a picture attached... The feature set sounds right, the move away from doing everything from the ground up sounds right. There's a lot of companies that have put a lot of effort into building technologies for cell phones-- it would be foolhardy for Apple to think they could do everything better. Get into the market with something that innovates in one small area-- even if that's just in its support for iTunes. Once you understand the market a little better, improve on the pieces you think you can.

So is that extra $.77 billion Apple made going to make a whit of difference in the end? Both companies have more cash then they know what to do with. Frankly MSFT should be less university research and more single-minded focus on products like Apple.

I am confused. If your Mac is networked, why not just share your music folder on your network so any computer etc can play the music from the shared music folder on the mac?

Because what I ultimately want is an airplay/airmusic station ready to play from any of the 9 iOS/iTunes devices in the house wirelessly in the family area.

This whole story seems to be written to get a rise out of people, because if it's real...wow.

Here's the way I see Dmac: I'm 16, and I'm invincible. I'm awesome and no one will tell me what to do, because I'm the son of some high-falootin' senior partner at some law firm in Michigan. My mom has sued people for damage she herself has admittedly caused and won, because she's a sack of **** just like I am! She will lie to further herself, and so will I. Other people better get out of my way because I'm such a badass.

Notice the original OP, it's basically phrased like this: Someone did something I didn't like, and they shouldn't do that. But when I do it do them, it's OK. No one should ever do anything to me, but I can do it to them all I want.

Yeah, Dmac...you're a loser. The numerous posts in this thread have shown it. You are conceited, arrogant, and have no sense that you are ever wrong...just what YOU think YOU want to do. Your parents have reinforced that thought by probably spoiling you and suing anyone who gets in your way of being awesome.

"I'm 16 and I'm an awesome driver" is BS. THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-6UCv4etyk) is what I think of when I think of awesome 16-year-old drivers flying down an interstate thinking they own the road. And the driver of this car was a teen.

And as someone said above...yes, this totally defines my stereotype of BMW drivers. Seriously "I shouldn't HAVE to obey the speed limit because I drive a BMW"...ARE YOU SERIOUS??? I live in Atlanta, and if you go under 75 on the interstates here, you will get passed left and right. So I drive 80 normally. So don't act like I don't understand fast driving or that I don't go over the limit. That's not the point here, pal. You're determined and parental-backed-up arrogance in the point.

EDIT: I wrote this reply before reading the last two pages of this thread. I am now convinced that Dmac is a troll. Past posts of "My mommy got a parking ticking and I want to know if my poor mommy will be able to get out of it" while current posts of "My power-attorney mother will sue the pants off of anyone who gets in her way".

    Also...
Looking for a new car and can't afford much (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=709933&highlight=rich)..in which he said "And you'd be surprised by what some of the kids at my school drive. Some of them get brand new BMWs and Mercedes for their 16th birthday, it's disgusting. There's a girl that got a fully loaded Mercedes SLK-350 for her birthday last week. It's a $65,000 car. I wanted to vomit, when I found out."

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=985184&highlight=parents...
I can say from first hand experience, driving with a parent isn't much fun. You're just missing out on loads of hypocrisy spewing from your parents' mouths.

Exactly. Which is why the Ghz myth will stay for a long time. You can't market Memory or FSB or SATA or PCI-X/PCI-E, you won't get anywhere.

Ghz, GB, "X times faster", and you can play games that look very pretty. Those will be what computer marketing will be all about for many years to come.Yeah, the GHz made sense to me until AMD started pulling this XXXX+ naming. Then I realized it. It worked pretty much until Intel gave up on clock speed is the THING when it comes to computing power.

I didn't buy a new computer between 1999 - 2003 so I had a lot of catching up to do.

1mio for 125000 movies. so they make an avaerage of $8 per movie. iTS sells them for about $10-$12.

so it seems apple makes about 2-3 bucks per movie (minus the bandwith/server cost).

i wonder if the movie business is profitable for apple or if it's merely to promote iPod's iTV and Mac's.

Want an un-encrypted copy of that iTMS rental movie? Stream it to an airplay-ripper you've downloaded off the 'net, and it'll be re-compressed in non-DRM form for you to play back whenever you wish.

Can't you just do this anyway with some other kind of ripper?

show me the law that says it'l illegal to notify other drivers of a cop checking speeds, or to notify the position of a DUI check point.

Maybe it's not illegal everywhere. I was always taught that it was illegal, for example, to flash your lights to oncoming traffic in order to warn of a speed trap. I grew up in North Carolina. Maybe it's only illegal there.

As for notifying of the position of a DUI check, maybe it's not illegal, but perhaps it should be? If it's not illegal, then these programs are doing wrong, so why pull them?

I simply maintain that pulling the programs will simply mean that people will share the information via some other method, and I even made a prediction of the method they will use. It would actually surprise me if it's not already in use that way.

How to make it a best seller:

Being a true smart phone, capable of booting Mac OS X mobile (to be released) and thus being used as a wireless computerless remote for Keynote and PowerPoint presentations made on Mac or Windows.

Will sell millions on corporate, education and domestic markets.

    With a huge halo effect!!!

That was my thought as well. Just as they did with the iPod and consumer identification. They could make serious inroads in business by showing them how to do integration right while looking cool at the same time. Blackberries and Treos are an integral part of the business person's life right now and introducing a phone with those functions (done better of course) in a beautiful form could change a lot of perceptions about Apple in the business community.
Apple could change their marketshare dramatically by getting businesses to 'switch'. With the option of running XP on Macware, its no longer an impossibility. Steve has been able to anticipate the consumer market pretty well, maybe he could do the same in the business arena.
